Nicotinamide riboside supplementation to improve metabolic flexibility during Zone 2 training
Temporal and Dose-response Effects of Nicotinamide Riboside Supplementation on Metabolic Flexibility During Zone 2 Training in Adults: a Double-blinded, Randomized, Controlled, Crossover Trial
This test will see if taking nicotinamide riboside (NR) helps healthy adults improve metabolic flexibility during Zone 2 endurance training.

What this trial studies
This interventional study enrolls healthy adults (age >18, BMI <30) who will perform prescribed Zone 2 endurance training while receiving nicotinamide riboside (NR) supplementation. Metabolic outcomes related to NAD metabolism, mitochondrial function, and substrate use during exercise will be measured before and after the intervention. People currently taking vitamin B supplements or NAD precursors, or those with conditions that contraindicate exercise, are excluded. The trial is conducted on-site at The Chinese University of Hong Kong's Kwok Sports Building.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Healthy adults over 18 with BMI under 30 who are cleared for endurance exercise and not taking vitamin B or NAD supplements are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: People with cardiovascular disease, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders, or those taking vitamin B/NAD supplements or medications that affect the outcomes are unlikely to benefit or are excluded.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, NR supplementation could improve cellular energy metabolism and help healthy exercisers burn fat more efficiently and delay fatigue.
How similar studies have performed: Prior studies show that aerobic exercise and NR supplementation can raise NAD levels and improve mitochondrial function, but combining NR with Zone 2 training has limited direct evidence.
