What this trial studies

This observational effort aims to develop and validate multimodal scales that capture everyday communicative performance in adults with post-stroke aphasia, giving particular attention to conversational behavior and gestures. Researchers will use a conversational approach, specific tests of communicative gestures, and questionnaires for both patients and caregivers to gather data during inpatient neurorehabilitation and outpatient visits. The protocol deliberately includes non-linguistic factors such as motivation, attention, awareness, and alternative communication strategies to reflect activity and participation in daily life. Collected data will be used to create practical tools clinicians can use to set personalized therapy goals and monitor real-life communication outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are Italian-speaking adults (over 18) with language and communication problems following a stroke who can give informed consent and are receiving inpatient or outpatient neurorehabilitation at IRCCS San Camillo.

Not a fit: People with unstable medical conditions, those who are not native Italian speakers, or those unable to participate due to severely reduced alertness or oxygen needs are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, clinicians would have better tools to set personalized rehabilitation goals and measure real-life communication improvements for people with aphasia.

How similar studies have performed: While prior work has explored gesture and conversational measures, validated and widely accepted tools for everyday communicative performance in aphasia remain limited, so this validation is relatively novel.
