What this trial studies
This project evaluates a new technique for applying eye patches in children diagnosed with amblyopia or strabismus. Parents will be instructed on two different methods: the standard flat application and a modified technique that involves pinching the edges of the patch to enhance comfort. The study will take place at Texas Children's Hospital, where eligible patients will be randomized into either the control or study group after informed consent is obtained. The goal is to determine if the modified technique leads to better compliance with patching.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged birth to 7 years who have been prescribed an eye patch for amblyopia or strabismus.
Not a fit: Patients with known skin reactions to patch or bandage adhesive will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this method could significantly improve compliance with patching in young patients, leading to better treatment outcomes for amblyopia and strabismus.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been various approaches to improve compliance in pediatric ophthalmology, this specific method of patch application has not been widely tested.
