Nerve block injections for chronic jaw (TMJ) pain
Treatment of Chronic Temporomandibular Pain With Peripheral Nerve Block

What this trial studies
This prospective observational project follows adults with chronic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain who receive peripheral nerve block injections as part of routine care at a TMJ clinic. Providers inject local anesthetic near nerves that carry pain from the TMJ region, then patients return for scheduled follow-up visits to record pain levels and jaw function. Participants must have had TMJ pain for at least 12 months and have failed at least two prior treatment approaches. The study collects outcome data without changing the clinical treatment plan to characterize how often and how long patients experience relief.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults with chronic TMJ pain lasting 12 months or more who have tried and not benefited from at least two prior treatments, are mentally competent, and are not pregnant.
Not a fit: People with recent-onset TMJ pain, those who have not yet tried standard therapies, pregnant patients, or those unable to attend required follow-up visits are unlikely to benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could offer longer-lasting pain relief and improved jaw function for people whose TMJ pain hasn't responded to standard treatments.
How similar studies have performed: Peripheral nerve blocks are already used in practice and small case series report pain relief, but large controlled trials for chronic TMD are limited.
