Nationwide survey of small and vulnerable newborns
A National Multicenter Epidemiological Investigation of Small Vulnerable Newborns in China

What this trial studies
This is a multicenter, observational effort using a unified definition and framework to describe small vulnerable newborns (SVN) across China. Participating centers will collect clinical data and complete standardized questionnaires on newborns meeting SGA, preterm, or low birth weight criteria born between January 1 and December 31, 2024. Cases with incomplete medical records that prevent comprehensive evaluation will be excluded. The collected data will be used to map the burden of SVN and to identify targets for prevention and intervention strategies.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Newborns admitted to participating hospitals between January 1 and December 31, 2024 who are small for gestational age (<10th percentile for gestational age and sex), born before 37 weeks' gestation, or weigh less than 2,500 grams are eligible.
Not a fit: Newborns outside the enrollment timeframe, those not meeting SGA/preterm/LBW criteria, or cases with incomplete medical records are unlikely to benefit from this study's findings directly.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the project could guide targeted prevention and early-intervention efforts that reduce complications for small and vulnerable newborns.
How similar studies have performed: Regional and single-center descriptive studies have generated useful epidemiologic data, but a coordinated nationwide survey using a unified framework is relatively novel in China.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: 1. Newborns diagnosed as vulnerable infants at the participating hospitals between January 1 and December 31, 2024; 2. Meeting any one of the following criteria: * Diagnosed as small for gestational age (SGA): birth weight below the 10th percentile for infants of the same gestational age and sex; * Preterm infants: gestational age less than 37 weeks; * Low Birth Weight (LBW) infants: birth weight less than 2,500 grams. Exclusion Criteria: * Incomplete medical records due to missing data preventing comprehensive case evaluation.
