What this trial studies
This intervention focuses on providing a brief motivational interviewing approach to address alcohol and cannabis use among diverse adolescents aged 12-17. Teens who screen positive for risky substance use will be enrolled through partner clinics, where they will complete an online consent process and baseline survey. Based on their responses, participants will receive either enhanced usual care or the Chat intervention, which can be delivered virtually or in-person. Follow-up surveys will be conducted at 3, 6, and 12 months, with participants receiving gift card incentives for their participation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adolescents aged 12-17 who receive healthcare at participating health systems and screen positive for at-risk substance use.
Not a fit: Patients who do not meet the inclusion criteria or do not screen positive for risky substance use will not benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly reduce risky alcohol and cannabis use among adolescents.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that brief interventions can be effective in reducing substance use among adolescents, suggesting potential success for this approach.
