What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a new bystander intervention program called Motivate-the-Bystander (MTB) in encouraging young adults to intervene in sexual risk situations. Participants will be divided into three groups: one receiving the MTB intervention alone, another receiving MTB with an alcohol reduction component, and a control group focused on stress reduction. The study will assess changes in bystander behaviors and alcohol consumption through online measures and virtual reality scenarios. The goal is to determine if the MTB approaches can significantly increase intervention behaviors and decrease alcohol use among participants.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 18-25 who are heavy drinkers and reside in Lancaster and surrounding counties in Nebraska.
Not a fit: Patients who do not meet the age or drinking criteria, or those who are not fluent in English, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to more effective strategies for preventing sexual violence and reducing harmful drinking behaviors among young adults.
How similar studies have performed: While bystander intervention programs have been implemented before, this specific approach combining bystander motivation with alcohol reduction is novel and has not been extensively tested.
