Morus nigra (black mulberry) mouthwash for gingivitis
Evaluation of the Efficacy of Morus Nigra Mouthwash as an Adjunct to Scaling and Root Planing in the Treatment of Gingivitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial
This trial tests whether using a Morus nigra (black mulberry) mouthwash twice daily for 14 days after scaling and root planing helps reduce gum inflammation and bacterial load in people with generalized gingivitis.

What this trial studies
This randomized, controlled trial will enroll 30 patients with generalized gingivitis and compare standard non-surgical periodontal treatment (scaling and root planing, SRP) alone versus SRP plus a Morus nigra mouthwash used twice daily for 14 days. Clinical measures like Gingival Index and Plaque Index will be recorded at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months. Biochemical analysis will measure cytokine levels (TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-10) in gingival crevicular fluid by ELISA, and microbiological analysis of subgingival plaque will be done by real-time PCR. The trial is single-center at Inonu University Faculty of Dentistry and focuses on short-term adjunctive effects of the mouthwash following SRP.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are systemically healthy adults with generalized gingivitis, at least 20 natural teeth, who are non-smokers and can attend visits at the dental center and provide informed consent.
Not a fit: Patients with periodontitis, systemic diseases (like diabetes or cardiovascular disease), recent antibiotic or anti-inflammatory use, smokers, pregnant or lactating individuals, or those allergic to Morus nigra are unlikely to benefit or be eligible.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the mouthwash could provide an easy adjunct to SRP that reduces gum inflammation and lowers harmful subgingival bacteria.
How similar studies have performed: Preclinical and small clinical reports suggest Morus extracts have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, but clinical evidence specifically for Morus nigra mouthwash as an adjunct in gingivitis is limited.
