Monitoring blood sugar levels in older adults in long-term care facilities
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) to Assess Hypoglycemia in Older Adults With Diabetes in Long Term Care (LTC) Facilities

What this trial studies
This study aims to assess the frequency and duration of hypoglycemia in older adults with diabetes residing in long-term care facilities. By utilizing continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology, the study will track blood sugar levels over a 10-day period for 300 participants. The research will focus on different clinical subgroups, including those living in skilled nursing facilities and those on various hypoglycemic medications. The findings will help understand the burden of hypoglycemia in this vulnerable population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 64 years old with a diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes who are currently using glucose-lowering medications or insulin.
Not a fit: Patients who are currently taking hydroxyurea or those who refuse to sign the consent form will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management of diabetes and reduced hypoglycemia in older adults living in long-term care.
How similar studies have performed: While continuous glucose monitoring has been used in various populations, this specific focus on older adults in long-term care facilities is relatively novel.
