What this trial studies
This study aims to identify high blood pressure in African American teens by using home blood pressure monitoring instead of traditional office measurements. The researchers will compare the results from home monitoring devices with those obtained from a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor, which is considered the gold standard for diagnosis. The goal is to determine if home monitoring can provide a more accurate assessment of blood pressure in this higher-risk population. This approach addresses the limitations of current diagnostic methods that may overlook hypertension in teens.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are African American teens who have not been previously diagnosed with hypertension.
Not a fit: Patients who have a prior diagnosis of hypertension or are currently taking blood pressure medications will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to more accurate diagnoses of high blood pressure in African American teens, allowing for earlier intervention and better health outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While home blood pressure monitoring has been successfully used in Europe, this specific approach in a higher-risk population of African American teens is novel and has not been extensively tested in the United States.
