What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to develop and assess 'My Mobile Wallet', a behavioral and economic intervention designed to improve medication adherence among tuberculosis patients in rural southwestern Uganda. The study will compare the effectiveness of this intervention, which includes SMS texts, incentives, and a medication monitoring device, against standard care over a six-month period. Researchers will evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention, focusing on its impact on treatment adherence and overall health outcomes for tuberculosis patients. Given the high burden of tuberculosis in Uganda, this approach seeks to address the critical issue of poor treatment adherence that contributes to drug resistance and increased transmission.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are newly diagnosed tuberculosis patients aged 18 and older who own a mobile phone and live in Mbarara District.

Not a fit: Patients who are unable to use mobile money-based SMS or have severe mental conditions limiting their ability to provide consent may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve tuberculosis treatment adherence, reduce drug resistance, and enhance health outcomes for patients in rural Uganda.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using mobile health interventions to improve medication adherence, indicating that this approach has potential for success.
