What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the BumptUp mobile application in increasing physical activity levels among pregnant and postpartum women in rural areas. The study will involve 176 participants who will be randomly assigned to either the intervention group using the app or a control group receiving an educational brochure. Key outcomes will include changes in physical activity, weight status, dietary intake, glucose tolerance, blood pressure, and mental health. Data will be collected at various stages of pregnancy and postpartum to assess the app's impact over time.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are English-speaking women aged 18-44 with a confirmed singleton viable pregnancy who own a smartphone and have physician approval for exercise.
Not a fit: Patients with multiple gestation pregnancies or those with medical conditions that prevent exercise will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly enhance the physical and mental health of pregnant and postpartum women, leading to better maternal and infant outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While mobile health interventions have shown promise in promoting healthy behaviors, high-quality evidence specifically targeting physical activity during pregnancy is limited, making this approach relatively novel.
