What this trial studies
This study investigates the effectiveness of Meditation Awareness Training (MAT), a second-generation mindfulness-based intervention, aimed at enhancing quality of life, pain management, and psycho-spiritual wellbeing in cancer patients. Unlike first-generation mindfulness-based interventions, MAT incorporates traditional Buddhist concepts such as impermanence and emptiness, potentially offering deeper psychological and spiritual benefits. Participants will attend weekly 2-hour sessions for 8 weeks, focusing on mindfulness techniques to help manage psychological distress associated with cancer. The study aims to provide a holistic approach to cancer care by addressing both mental and spiritual health.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 who have received a cancer diagnosis within the last 24 months and are able to attend weekly sessions.
Not a fit: Patients with a palliative diagnosis or those who do not speak English fluently may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve the quality of life and psychological wellbeing of cancer patients.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that mindfulness-based interventions can effectively reduce anxiety and depression in cancer patients, suggesting a promising outlook for this approach.
