What this trial studies

This observational, cross-sectional project will sequentially recruit 100 adults aged 18–65 admitted to NHS general adult psychiatry (GAP) inpatient wards at St John's Hospital. Participants will complete standard diagnostic questionnaires and severity rating scales and researchers will perform a systematic review of case notes, taking about an hour in total. The collected data will be used to characterise both psychiatric and general medical comorbidities and to estimate how many GAP inpatients would typically be excluded from clinical trials. These results will provide a baseline to compare 'real world' inpatient profiles with participants in prior clinical trials and help explain gaps between trial results and clinical outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18–65 who are currently admitted to NHS general adult psychiatry inpatient wards (GAP) at St John's Hospital and who can give informed consent are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People admitted to non-GAP wards (forensic, perinatal, old age, young people's units, or general medical wards) or those seeking direct therapeutic benefits from participation are unlikely to gain clinical improvement from this observational work.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could help make future clinical trials and treatments more relevant to the real-world hospital inpatients they aim to help.

How similar studies have performed: While other observational phenotyping studies exist, detailed sequential profiling of unselected NHS GAP inpatients is relatively novel and less well characterised in the literature.
