Measuring PSA Levels in Men with Inflammatory Bowel Disease During Flares
The Effect of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Flares on Serum Prostate Specific Antigen
This study is testing how PSA levels change in men with Inflammatory Bowel Disease during flare-ups to see if it can help improve prostate cancer screening for them.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to measure Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) levels in men aged 40-69 with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) before, during, and after disease flares. The study will analyze how PSA levels correlate with the location of the disease, specifically comparing rectal involvement to other areas. By understanding the relationship between IBD and PSA levels, the research seeks to improve prostate cancer screening practices for men with IBD, potentially reducing unnecessary healthcare costs and interventions. The findings may help clarify whether PSA elevations are due to inflammation or indicative of prostate cancer risk.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are men aged 40-69 with a confirmed diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Not a fit: Patients with a history of prostate cancer or prior prostate procedures will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could optimize prostate cancer screening for men with IBD, reducing unnecessary healthcare encounters and costs.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated that men with IBD may have higher PSA levels, suggesting that this approach could yield valuable insights, though this specific correlation is not extensively tested.
