Measuring Movement and Behaviors in Older Adults

Validation of Cut-points to Estimate Sedentary Time and Physical Activity Intensities in Older Adults

University of Castilla-La Mancha · NCT04173715

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to validate specific raw accelerometer cut points for individuals aged 65 and older, focusing on their functional status. Participants will be divided into four groups based on their physical function and will engage in various intensity physical activities while wearing accelerometers and portable gas analyzers. The study will assess energy expenditure and accelerations to derive cut-points for sedentary behavior, light physical activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. This research addresses the lack of validated cut-points for older adults, which is crucial for accurately measuring their physical activity levels.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are non-institutionalized individuals aged 65 and older with a physical function assessment score greater than 3.

Not a fit: Patients who have started an exercise program or have significant cognitive impairment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide tailored physical activity guidelines for older adults, enhancing their health and quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on accelerometer cut-points in younger populations, this approach for older adults is relatively novel and underexplored.
