What this trial studies

This observational study aims to improve the identification of the epileptogenic zone in children with focal lesional epilepsy by utilizing advanced imaging techniques such as arterial spin-labeling perfusion MRI (ASL-MRI) and resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) in conjunction with electroencephalogram (EEG). The goal is to reduce the need for invasive procedures like stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) by accurately mapping brain activity and abnormalities. By comparing the results from these non-invasive imaging methods to the traditional SEEG reference, the study seeks to enhance pre-surgical assessments and outcomes for pediatric epilepsy patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children under 18 years old with refractory focal lesional epilepsy or rare non-lesional epilepsy who exhibit specific EEG abnormalities.

Not a fit: Patients with generalized epilepsy or those requiring sedation or general anesthesia for MRI will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to less invasive pre-surgical evaluations for children with epilepsy, improving their treatment options and outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promising results using similar non-invasive imaging techniques for mapping epileptic networks, indicating potential for success in this approach.
