Local warming to improve arterial catheterization in young children
Effect of Local Warming for Arterial Catheterization in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Study
This study tests if warming the skin before inserting a catheter can help young children having heart surgery have a better chance of a successful procedure.

What this trial studies
This study investigates whether applying local warming to the radial artery catheterization site can enhance the success rate of arterial catheterization in pediatric patients scheduled for heart surgery. A total of 126 children aged two years or younger will be randomly assigned to either a warming group or a control group without warming. The study will assess the first-attempt success rate of catheterization as the primary outcome, along with secondary outcomes including changes in artery diameter and cross-sectional area, as well as any complications that arise. The goal is to determine if warming can facilitate better catheterization outcomes in this vulnerable population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are pediatric patients aged two years or younger who require arterial catheterization for cardiac surgery.
Not a fit: Patients with unstable vital signs or those who already have an arterial catheter in place may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to higher success rates in arterial catheterization, reducing the need for multiple attempts and associated complications in pediatric patients.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of local warming for arterial catheterization in pediatric patients is novel, similar studies in adult populations have shown promising results.
