What this trial studies
The team will design and beta test Life at 100.4, an immersive social VR education tool aimed at closing knowledge gaps about febrile neutropenia for patients and caregivers. Phase 1 includes interviews and focus groups with stakeholders to inform content and navigation. Phase 2 produces a VR prototype, and Phase 3 will pilot the tool with about five patient-caregiver-provider triads to measure feasibility and acceptability using validated instruments. The intervention targets people with new oncologic diagnoses who will receive chemotherapy and a central line.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adolescents and young adults newly diagnosed with a malignancy or bone marrow failure who plan to receive chemotherapy and a central line, together with a participating caregiver at Yale Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
Not a fit: Patients with medical contraindications to virtual reality (for example, head wounds or a history of seizures triggered by flashing lights) or those not planning to receive chemotherapy are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help families recognize febrile neutropenia earlier, reduce delays to care, and lower related complications.
How similar studies have performed: Virtual reality has shown promise for patient education and procedural preparation in other settings, but the use of social VR specifically for febrile neutropenia education is novel and not previously well tested.
