Jaw ridge changes after tooth removal and ridge preservation

Determinants of Bone Dimensional Changes After Extraction and Alveolar Ridge Preservation

Observational Marquette University · NCT06624982

We will see if a socket that widens right after a tooth is removed or stays the same changes ridge width and height four months later in adults having a single extraction with bone graft and a resorbable membrane.

What this trial studies

This observational study will enroll adults scheduled for a single tooth extraction with immediate bone grafting and a resorbable membrane at Marquette University's Graduate Periodontics Clinic. Investigators will record clinical and anatomic measures before extraction, immediately after extraction, and at a four-month follow-up, including buccolingual ridge width and height, gingival width and thickness, and buccal bone thickness. Detailed extraction variables (number of roots, root size, instruments used, flap elevation, extraction duration, anesthetic, and operator experience) will also be recorded to identify factors tied to dimensional changes. The main comparison is between sites that show immediate post-extraction socket expansion versus those that show no width change to determine their relationship with four-month bone and ridge outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18–75 in generally good health with controlled periodontal disease who are scheduled for a single tooth extraction with bone graft and resorbable membrane, have adjacent teeth, and maintain adequate socket wall integrity.

Not a fit: Smokers, pregnant people, individuals with active periodontal disease, systemic conditions that impair healing, or sites with major pre-existing bone loss or severe infection are unlikely to benefit from these specific findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help dentists predict how the ridge will heal and tailor grafting and implant planning to improve long-term outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Prior studies show alveolar ridge preservation can limit post-extraction bone loss, but using immediate post-extraction socket expansion versus no change as a determinant of later dimensional changes is less well studied.
