Investigating weight gain after pancreas transplantation
Role of Pancreatic Exocrine Secretion in Weight Gain After Pancreas Transplantation
Rush University Medical Center · NCT04690738
This study is trying to see if the levels of certain digestive enzymes in people who have had a pancreas transplant can help explain why they gain weight after the surgery.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the role of pancreatic exocrine secretion in weight gain following pancreas transplantation. It builds on a pilot study that indicated high fecal elastase concentration (FEC) levels in transplant recipients, particularly in the early post-transplant period. The current study will assess patients from the pre-transplant phase through the post-transplant period to determine if early FEC levels correlate with subsequent weight gain. Additionally, it will investigate the relationship between obesity and the gut microbiome in these patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 18 to 80 who have received a pancreas transplant, with or without other organ transplants.
Not a fit: Patients who are unwilling to consent or participate in the study will not benefit from this research.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better management strategies for weight gain in pancreas transplant recipients, potentially reducing the risk of associated health complications.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on weight gain after liver and kidney transplants, this specific focus on pancreas transplantation and its relationship with exocrine secretion is relatively novel.
