Investigating viral levels in COVID-19 patients undergoing dental procedures
Viral Kinetics of SARS-CoV-2 in Patients in the Intensive Care Unit Undergoing Dental Procedures
NA · University of Sao Paulo General Hospital · NCT05311410
This study is testing how dental procedures affect the levels of the COVID-19 virus in critically ill patients to see if different types of treatments make a difference in their health.

What this trial studies
This study aims to understand the viral kinetics of SARS-CoV-2 in critically ill COVID-19 patients in the Intensive Care Unit who are undergoing dental procedures. It will assess the impact of bloody versus non-bloody dental treatments on viral replication and clinical outcomes. By analyzing blood samples through reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), the research seeks to identify any patterns in viral load that could correlate with patient health after dental interventions. The findings may provide insights into the safety and necessity of dental care in this vulnerable population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients aged 16 to 90 years with COVID-19 who require dental procedures such as subgingival scaling or tooth extraction.
Not a fit: Patients who are unable to undergo clinical examination or open dental procedures will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the safety of dental procedures for COVID-19 patients in intensive care, potentially improving patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific investigation of viral kinetics during dental procedures in COVID-19 patients is novel, related studies on viral load and dental interventions have shown varying results.
