Investigating the link between carpal tunnel syndrome and transthyretin amyloidosis in older adults
Systemic Transthyretin Amyloidosis: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in a Portuguese Population (CarPoS Study)
This study is trying to see if there’s a connection between carpal tunnel syndrome and a heart condition called transthyretin amyloidosis in older adults who have symptoms or need hand surgery.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the relationship between idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome and systemic transthyretin amyloidosis in a Portuguese population. It focuses on patients aged 60 and older who exhibit symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome or require hand surgery. The study will involve synovial biopsies and cardiac scintigraphy to assess amyloid deposition and its potential implications for cardiac health. By understanding this association, the research seeks to identify predictive factors for cardiac amyloidosis in affected individuals.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients aged 60 and older with symptomatic idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome.
Not a fit: Patients with conditions such as diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, or other inflammatory diseases may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved diagnostic and treatment strategies for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and underlying transthyretin amyloidosis.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific association being studied is novel, previous research has indicated potential links between amyloidosis and carpal tunnel syndrome, suggesting a promising area for exploration.
