Investigating the effects of physical activity on heart and muscle health in older adults

The Cardio-Sarcopenia Study

Observational National Heart Centre Singapore · NCT05203406

What this trial studies

This observational study focuses on older adults with a condition termed cardio-sarcopenia, which involves both cardiovascular and skeletal muscle deterioration. It aims to assess how varying levels of physical activity influence changes in cardiac function, muscle health, and body mass index (BMI) over a period of six to twelve months. Participants will be monitored through self-reported activities and objective measures of aerobic capacity, with data collected on diet, lifestyle, and biomarkers. The study challenges the traditional use of BMI as a health marker in older adults, potentially leading to new preventative strategies against cardiovascular aging.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are older adults aged 21 and above who exhibit signs of cardio-sarcopenia.

Not a fit: Patients who are unable to provide informed consent or do not meet the age criteria may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into effective physical activity interventions that improve heart and muscle health in older adults.

How similar studies have performed: While the concept of cardio-sarcopenia is relatively novel, previous studies have indicated the importance of physical activity in mitigating age-related cardiovascular and muscle decline.
