Investigating respiratory viruses in patients with acute heart failure
Respiratory Virus Infections in Hospitalized Patients With Acute Heart Failure Syndrome: A Prospective Multi-center Observational Study
This study looks at whether respiratory viruses like the flu and COVID-19 are present in adults with acute heart failure to see how these infections might affect their heart condition.

What this trial studies
This observational study enrolls adult patients admitted to the cardiology department with acute heart failure who have undergone a nasopharyngeal respiratory virus PCR test within 72 hours of admission. The study aims to analyze the detection rates of various respiratory viruses, including influenza, RSV, and coronaviruses, and to observe seasonal variations in their frequency. Additionally, it will assess how respiratory virus infections may influence the clinical presentation of acute heart failure. The findings could provide insights into the interplay between respiratory infections and heart failure.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 19 years or older with acute heart failure and suspected respiratory viral infections.
Not a fit: Patients with clear alternative causes of acute heart failure or other sources of infection may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of respiratory virus impacts on acute heart failure, potentially leading to improved patient management strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored respiratory infections in heart failure, this specific observational approach focusing on viral detection rates is relatively novel.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Adult aged 19 years or older admitted to the cardiology department with acute heart failure * NT-proBNP \>300 pg/mL * Clinician judgement of possible respiratory viral infection (fever \>38 degrees or cough, respiratory symptoms such as sputum or consolidation on x-ray or CRP \>5 mg/dL) * Patients who have a nasopharyngeal swab for respiratory virus PCR test performed within 72 hours of admission for any of the 3 reasons Exclusion Criteria: * Patients with a clear other cause of acute heart failure (ex. ACS, bradycardia requiring a pacemaker, uncontrolled tachycardia, uncontrolled severe hypertension (SBP \>180mmHg or DBP \>110mmHg), haemoglobin \<7g/dL or AHF precipitated by medication non-adherence) * If the cause of pulmonary oedema is prominently attributed to exacerbation of CKD * If there is a clear other source of infection that can explain the fever
