Investigating microplastics in ear fluid of children with ear infections
Evaluation of Microplastics Presence in Otitis Media With Effusion Material
TC Erciyes University · NCT06316635
This study is testing whether tiny pieces of plastic can be found in the ear fluid of children with long-term ear infections to see if they might be linked to the problem.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the presence of microplastics in the middle ear fluid of patients suffering from otitis media with effusion (OME). Children diagnosed with bilateral OME for at least three months or unilateral OME for at least nine months will be enrolled, while those with craniofacial anomalies or previous ear surgeries will be excluded. The study involves surgical procedures to collect ear fluid samples, which will then be analyzed for microplastics using established laboratory methods. The findings could shed light on the potential role of microplastics in the pathogenesis of OME and associated biofilms.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are children diagnosed with otitis media with effusion who meet the specified duration criteria.
Not a fit: Patients with craniofacial anomalies, cleft palate, or a history of previous ear surgery may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of the environmental impacts on ear infections and lead to improved treatment strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While the investigation of microplastics in biological samples is emerging, this specific focus on OME is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
