Investigating malnutrition in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis
Nutritional Status and Nutritional Problems in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease Treated With Hemodialysis
This study is testing how well a new way to diagnose malnutrition works for people with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis and if it can help predict their quality of life and health outcomes.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore how the GLIM criteria for diagnosing malnutrition can be effectively applied to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. It will assess various combinations and strategies for operationalizing the GLIM criteria and how these can predict outcomes such as quality of life, muscle strength, and mortality. Data will be collected from the Swedish renal registry and medical records at two hemodialysis units, with assessments occurring at baseline and follow-up. The study is set to begin in the fall of 2024.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who have been on hemodialysis for more than three months.
Not a fit: Patients who are on a dialysis frequency of once a week or those receiving peritoneal dialysis or home treatment may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved methods for diagnosing and managing malnutrition in CKD patients, potentially enhancing their quality of life and health outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While the operationalization of GLIM criteria in CKD patients is a relatively novel approach, similar studies have shown promise in improving nutritional assessments in other populations.
