Investigating heart failure in cirrhosis patients after TIPS procedure

Incidence and Predictors of Post-TIPS (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) Heart Failure in Patients With Cirrhosis

West China Hospital · NCT05596253

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to prospectively assess the incidence of heart failure in patients with liver cirrhosis who have undergone a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS). It will analyze the predictors and modifications of cardiac function in these patients, considering the hyperdynamic circulation often seen in cirrhosis. The study seeks to fill a gap in existing research regarding the cardiac implications of TIPS, which is commonly used to manage complications of cirrhosis such as refractory ascites and variceal bleeding. By understanding these dynamics, the study hopes to provide insights into managing cardiac health in this patient population.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients diagnosed with cirrhosis who have successfully undergone the TIPS procedure.

Not a fit: Patients with non-cirrhotic portal hypertension, previous TIPS, or existing heart failure may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved monitoring and management strategies for heart failure in cirrhosis patients post-TIPS.

How similar studies have performed: There is limited existing research specifically addressing heart failure incidence post-TIPS in cirrhosis patients, making this study a novel investigation.
