Investigating genetic factors in pulmonary fibrosis
Role of Genetics in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)
This study is trying to find out if certain inherited genes make people more likely to develop pulmonary fibrosis, especially in families with multiple cases of the disease.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the inherited genetic factors that contribute to familial pulmonary fibrosis and identify specific genes that may predispose individuals to develop this condition. By focusing on families with multiple cases of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis or idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, the study seeks to uncover the genetic underpinnings of these progressive lung diseases. The findings could lead to improved methods for early diagnosis and treatment options for pulmonary fibrosis. The overall hypothesis is that genetic predisposition plays a significant role in the development of these conditions.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include families with two or more members diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis or idiopathic interstitial pneumonia.
Not a fit: Patients whose pulmonary fibrosis is due to known causes or broader genetic syndromes may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better diagnostic tools and treatment strategies for patients with pulmonary fibrosis.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in identifying genetic factors related to pulmonary fibrosis, suggesting that this approach could yield valuable insights.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Two or more family members with a clinical diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) or Idiopathic Interstitial Pneumonia (IIP) * Additional family members may be eligible to participate if two family members are suspected of or diagnosed as having Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) or Idiopathic Interstitial Pneumonia (IIP) Exclusion Criteria: * Individuals whose pulmonary fibrosis is due to a known cause rather than idiopathic * Individuals whose pulmonary fibrosis is due to a broader genetic syndrome
