Investigating Endothelin 1 as a Marker for Kidney Issues in Sickle Cell Disease

The Role of Endothelin 1 as a Marker of Renal Impairment in Sickle Cell Disease

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to explore the role of urinary endothelin 1 as a potential biomarker for renal impairment in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) aged 1 to 18 years. By analyzing the levels of endothelin 1 in urine samples, researchers hope to identify correlations between these levels and kidney function in SCD patients. The study will include participants who meet specific inclusion criteria while excluding those with pre-existing renal diseases. The findings could enhance understanding of kidney complications in SCD and inform future management strategies.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children and adolescents aged 1 to 18 years diagnosed with sickle cell disease.

Not a fit: Patients with pre-existing renal disease prior to the study may not benefit from this research.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved monitoring and management of renal impairment in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific role of endothelin 1 in renal impairment among SCD patients is not extensively studied, similar approaches in other conditions have shown promise in identifying biomarkers for kidney function.
