Investigating biomarkers in unstable carotid plaque

EVALUATION OF NEW BIOMARKERS IN THE IDENTIFICATION OF UNSTABLE CAROTID PLAQUE

Observational Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS · NCT06887894

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to explore the relationships between circulating microRNAs and both symptomatic and asymptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis (ICAS), as well as the morphology of carotid plaques and the occurrence of future cardiovascular events. Participants will undergo carotid endarterectomy, allowing researchers to collect data on their plaque characteristics and associated biomarkers. The study focuses on understanding how these biomarkers may correlate with the severity of carotid artery diseases and potential cardiovascular risks.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years old with significant internal carotid artery stenosis who are referred for carotid artery endarterectomy.

Not a fit: Patients with significant internal carotid artery stenosis who are referred for carotid artery stenting may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved risk assessment and management strategies for patients with carotid artery diseases.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies investigating biomarkers in cardiovascular diseases, this specific approach focusing on miRNAs and unstable carotid plaque is relatively novel.
