Investigating biomarkers in patients with trigeminal neuralgia

Inflammatory Cytokine and Neuropeptide Study in Patients With Trigeminal Neuralgia

Not applicable Interventional Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center · NCT05685797

What this trial studies

This study aims to explore the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines and neurotransmitters in the blood of patients suffering from primary trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The research focuses on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms behind TN, which is characterized by severe facial pain. By analyzing biomarkers such as calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), and β-endorphin, the study seeks to provide insights into the effectiveness of treatments like radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) for patients who do not respond well to medication. The ultimate goal is to improve pain management strategies for TN patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients with trigeminal neuralgia who have a pain rating of more than 4 on the Numeric Rating Scale and have failed medical treatment.

Not a fit: Patients who have allergic reactions to local anesthetics or coagulation abnormalities may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better-targeted treatments for patients with trigeminal neuralgia, particularly those who do not respond to conventional medications.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies exploring biomarkers in trigeminal neuralgia, this specific approach focusing on inflammatory cytokines and neurotransmitters in blood is relatively novel.
