Intraoperative MRI to improve brain metastasis surgery

Evaluation of the Efficacy and Safety of Intraoperative MRI in the Surgery of Brain Metastases.

NA · Technical University of Munich · NCT07197632

What this trial studies

Adults who require surgical resection of brain metastases will receive neurosurgical removal guided by intraoperative 3T MRI to improve tumor visualization during the operation. Outcomes tracked will include extent of resection, need for additional procedures, operative time, and complication rates. The trial excludes patients with contraindications to 3T MRI and those under 18 years of age. The work is carried out at the Department of Neurosurgery, Munich University Hospital (rechts der Isar) under the Technical University of Munich.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (18+) with brain metastases for which surgical resection is indicated and who can safely undergo 3T MRI are the best candidates.

Not a fit: Patients who cannot have 3T MRI, are not surgical candidates, or whose metastases are unsuitable for resection are unlikely to benefit from this approach.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could enable more complete tumor removal in the first operation, potentially reducing repeat surgeries and improving recovery.

How similar studies have performed: Intraoperative MRI has improved resection rates in glioma surgery, but evidence specifically for brain metastases is limited and mixed.
