What this trial studies
This study aims to adapt and pilot test an intervention called THRIVE, designed for individuals experiencing suicidal crises at Crisis Stabilization Centers (CSCs). The intervention focuses on enhancing social connectedness and reducing perceived burdensomeness through group sessions during the CSC stay and follow-up coaching calls after discharge. By leveraging the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, the study seeks to improve recovery outcomes and community linkage for participants. The effectiveness of THRIVE will be compared to standard discharge and safety planning to assess its impact on suicide risk factors.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults admitted to a CSC with active suicidal ideation and the ability to participate in follow-up communications.
Not a fit: Patients under 18, those unable to communicate in English, or those with acute psychiatric instability may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve recovery and reduce suicide risk for individuals in crisis.
How similar studies have performed: Preliminary data from similar interventions suggest promising results, indicating potential for success in this adapted approach.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: 1. Admission to CSC with suicidal crisis, as defined by active suicide ideation ascertained by the Columbia Suicide-Severity Rating scale, which the sites already routinely administer. 2. Ability and willingness to provide information for and permission to contact one person in case of emergency or inability to reach the participant for follow-up Exclusion Criteria: 1. Under age 18. 2. Inability to communicate with the researcher in English. 3. Acute psychiatric instability (e.g., psychotic symptoms). Most patients with psychosis are transferred to Emergency Departments instead of CSCs, so we do not expect many exclusions based on this criterion. 4. Inability to access a phone to participate in phone follow-up program.
