What this trial studies

The 12-month Hybrid Type 1 implementation-effectiveness project will implement an adapted Individual Placement and Support model (IPS-AUT) through partnerships with supported employment agencies in California. Researchers will train employment providers, develop and pilot a Consumer Support Toolbox informed by prior focus groups, and deliver IPS-AUT services to eligible clients. Primary outcomes include competitive integrated employment rates (with a target of at least 50% success), feasibility and acceptability (targeting ≥75%), and fidelity to IPS standards, all measured over 12 months. The study will also examine mediators such as caregiver engagement and work-related social cognition using surveys, interviews, focus groups, and standardized assessments to refine strategies for a larger R01 trial.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are California-supported employment agency clients aged 18–40 with a community diagnosis of autism, at least a fourth-grade reading level, who are currently unemployed and seeking employment.

Not a fit: People who are not interested in employment, who fall outside the 18–40 age range, who lack the minimum reading level, or who are not served by participating California agencies are unlikely to benefit or be eligible.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, IPS-AUT could increase the number of autistic young adults who obtain and retain competitive integrated employment and create a scalable model for employment services.

How similar studies have performed: IPS has strong evidence for people with serious mental illness and pilot work in autism/IDD shows promise, but large-scale implementation specifically for autistic young adults is still limited.
