Increased dietary fiber plus time‑restricted eating to lower cancer risk in adults with obesity

Examining the Independent and Combined Effects of Dietary Fiber and Time Restricted Eating on Indicators of Cancer Risk: the Fiber and Time Restricted Eating (F.I.T.) Study

Not applicable Interventional University of Oklahoma · NCT07219706

What this trial studies

This interventional study will compare combinations of two dietary approaches—raising fiber intake and adopting time‑restricted eating—delivered through group education and counseling. Eligible participants are adults aged 18 or older with BMI ≥30 kg/m2 who consume ≤15 g of fiber per day and who have a compatible smartphone for ecological momentary assessment. People with conditions that prevent fiber intake, limiting food allergies or intolerances, a positive eating‑disorder screen, current GLP‑1 receptor agonist use, or pregnancy/breastfeeding are excluded. The study will use app-based reporting and counseling to track behaviors and measure changes in biomarkers and diet-related behaviors linked to cancer risk and weight.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older with obesity (BMI ≥30) who currently consume 15 g or less of fiber per day and can use a compatible smartphone are the intended participants.

Not a fit: People with inflammatory bowel disease or other diagnoses that preclude increased fiber, restrictive food allergies/intolerances, a positive eating‑disorder screen, current GLP‑1 receptor agonist use, or those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy may not benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the combination could lower biomarkers of cancer risk and help with weight management and healthier eating habits.

How similar studies have performed: Prior research shows time‑restricted eating and higher‑fiber diets can improve weight and metabolic markers, but using them together specifically to reduce cancer risk is relatively novel and less tested.
