What this trial studies
This study evaluates a proactive model of provider contact to deliver smoking cessation support for individuals living with HIV, comparing it to standard care. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either Treatment As Usual (TAU) or the Proactive Outreach with Medication Opt-out for Tobacco Treatment Engagement (PrOMOTE). The primary goal is to assess the effectiveness of these approaches in increasing smoking cessation rates and quit attempts at a 12-week follow-up. Additionally, the study will explore barriers and facilitators to implementing the PrOMOTE model and its impact on health outcomes related to HIV.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 21 and older who are currently diagnosed with HIV and are current smokers.
Not a fit: Patients who are currently participating in other tobacco treatment programs or using cessation medications will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly improve smoking cessation rates among people living with HIV, leading to better health outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using proactive outreach models for smoking cessation, suggesting potential success for this approach.
