What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to address depression and functional impairment among elderly women in India by implementing two interventions: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and facilitated group activities. Over a 12-week period, participants will be randomized into four groups: one receiving CBT during home visits, one participating in group activities, one receiving both interventions, and a control group receiving no intervention. The study will utilize lay government community volunteers to deliver the interventions, focusing on enhancing the participants' outlook on life and relationships. The trial seeks to provide insights into effective mental health care strategies for low-income elderly populations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are women aged 55 and older who are experiencing symptoms of depression.
Not a fit: Patients with hearing, speech, or mental impairments may not benefit from this study due to the nature of the interventions.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly improve the mental health and quality of life for elderly women suffering from depression.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using CBT and group activities to improve mental health outcomes in similar populations, indicating a promising approach.
