Improving maintenance treatment adherence for adults with eosinophilic esophagitis
An Intervention Study to Improve Therapeutic Compliance in Adult Patients With Eosinophilic Esophagitis.
This project will test whether extra education plus more frequent follow-up and reminders help adults with eosinophilic esophagitis stick to their long-term medications.

What this trial studies
Investigators will test whether providing extra education combined with more frequent follow-up visits and patient reminders improves long-term adherence to maintenance medication in adults with eosinophilic esophagitis. Eligible participants are adults with histologically confirmed EoE (>15 eosinophils per high power field) who are on or starting maintenance therapy with a proton pump inhibitor or swallowed topical corticosteroids. The intervention offers additional education, closer monitoring, and reminder prompts while the comparator receives usual care and standard information. Adherence will be tracked over time using medication records and follow-up contacts to determine whether the enhanced support increases persistence with therapy.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (≥18 years) with biopsy-confirmed eosinophilic esophagitis (>15 eos/hpf) who are currently on or about to start PPI or swallowed topical corticosteroid maintenance therapy.
Not a fit: Patients who require esophageal dilation, have severe unstable comorbidities, are receiving other investigational treatments, or cannot read Dutch or English are unlikely to benefit or be eligible.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could help patients stay on maintenance medication more consistently, reducing symptoms and the risk of complications or urgent care visits.
How similar studies have performed: Behavioral, educational, and reminder-based programs have improved medication adherence in many chronic diseases, but direct evidence in eosinophilic esophagitis is limited.
