What this trial studies

This pilot randomized controlled trial aims to enhance lung cancer screening uptake by integrating social determinants of health (SDoH) assessments with a community-based educational tool. Participants aged 50 to 80 who are at risk for lung cancer will be recruited from community events in New Jersey. The study will compare the effectiveness of the combined intervention against the educational tool alone, measuring primary outcomes like screening uptake and secondary outcomes such as health beliefs and stigma. The goal is to identify effective strategies for increasing lung cancer screening in populations facing barriers related to social determinants.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are men and women aged 50 to 80 who currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years and have a significant smoking history.

Not a fit: Patients who have been diagnosed with lung cancer or have previously undergone lung cancer screening will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly increase lung cancer screening rates among at-risk individuals, ultimately reducing lung cancer morbidity and mortality.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using community-based interventions to improve cancer screening rates, indicating that this approach has potential.
