What this trial studies

This initiative aims to enhance lung cancer screening rates in the Bronx, New York, by establishing a Centralized Screening Unit (CSU). The CSU will streamline the workflow for lung cancer screening, addressing barriers such as incomplete smoking histories and lack of patient navigation. By shifting responsibilities away from busy clinical practices, the CSU will provide comprehensive support services to eligible patients, thereby increasing adherence to screening guidelines and follow-up care. The study focuses on a low-income, predominantly Hispanic and Black population, where lung cancer screening uptake has been particularly low.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 50-77 who are past or current smokers with a significant smoking history and no recent chest CT scans.

Not a fit: Patients who are instructed by their primary care provider not to be contacted or who do not meet the eligibility criteria will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly increase lung cancer screening rates and reduce mortality in underserved communities.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown that centralized approaches to cancer screening can improve adherence and outcomes, suggesting this method may be effective.
