What this trial studies
This study aims to enhance the care provided to patients with gout who visit the emergency department (ED) by implementing a novel post-ED intervention. The focus is on improving outpatient follow-up care for acute gout flares, particularly among underserved populations in the Southeastern U.S., where gout prevalence is high. The intervention involves using patient navigators to reach out to patients within 36-72 hours after their ED visit to promote follow-up care and improve overall gout management. Additionally, the study seeks to increase participation of minority groups in biomedical research.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who have experienced a confirmed acute gout flare and can communicate in English or Spanish.
Not a fit: Patients currently enrolled in another ongoing randomized controlled trial testing a different behavioral intervention may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve the quality of gout care and health outcomes for patients following an ED visit.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, similar studies focusing on improving follow-up care for chronic conditions have shown promise in enhancing patient outcomes.
