What this trial studies
This study evaluates a communication-priming intervention called 'CKD Jumpstart- Tips' designed to enhance shared decision-making between older adults with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their clinicians. The intervention aims to improve various aspects of the decision-making process, including communication quality, patient involvement, and adherence to treatment choices. By conducting a cluster-randomized controlled trial, the researchers will compare outcomes between patients receiving the intervention and those receiving usual care. Key metrics include shared decision-making levels, decisional conflict, and health-related quality of life.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are older adults diagnosed with advanced CKD Stage 4 or 5 who are planning to discuss treatment options with their clinicians.
Not a fit: Patients who are eligible for kidney transplant, currently on dialysis, or lack decision-making capacity may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve the decision-making experience and health outcomes for older adults with advanced CKD.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with communication-priming interventions in enhancing shared decision-making, suggesting this approach may be effective.
