What this trial studies
This project investigates the potential of using blood tests to enhance colorectal cancer screening, aiming to reduce unnecessary colonoscopies. Currently, individuals aged 50-74 in Denmark are invited to participate in a screening program that often leads to over a third of colonoscopies being unnecessary. By identifying blood biomarkers, the study seeks to determine individuals at very low risk of colorectal cancer after a positive stool test, thereby personalizing and optimizing the screening process. The goal is to alleviate the burden on healthcare resources while minimizing unpleasant procedures for patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 50-74 who are participating in the colorectal cancer screening program.
Not a fit: Patients who have not completed a colonoscopy or have a colorectal cancer obstruction may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce the number of unnecessary colonoscopies for patients.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using blood tests for screening is innovative, similar studies have shown promise in enhancing screening accuracy and reducing unnecessary procedures.
