What this trial studies

This project focuses on refining and optimizing a clinical decision support system called EMBED to enhance the treatment of opioid use disorder in emergency departments. Utilizing a Multiphase Optimization Strategy (MOST), the study will implement a factorial trial to test various strategies, including nurse prompts for withdrawal assessment and clinician prompts to encourage the use of the decision support system. The goal is to increase adherence to standard care protocols for administering buprenorphine to eligible patients. This is the first stage of a larger study that will include further optimization and evaluation phases.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are emergency department patients aged 18 and older with moderate to severe opioid use disorder.

Not a fit: Patients who are under 18 years of age, pregnant, or currently receiving medication for opioid use disorder may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved treatment outcomes for patients with opioid use disorder by ensuring they receive timely and appropriate care.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using clinical decision support systems for addiction treatment, indicating that this approach has potential for success.
