Impact of Preoperative Physical Activity on Bladder Cancer Surgery Outcomes
Prospective Randomized Interventional Study to Investigate the Impact of Preoperative Physical Activity on Perioperative Morbidity Following Radical Cystectomy
This study is testing if being more physically active before bladder cancer surgery can help patients recover better and have fewer complications.

What this trial studies
This study evaluates the effects of preoperative physical activity on patients undergoing radical cystectomy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer. It aims to determine whether increased physical fitness prior to surgery can reduce perioperative morbidity. Conducted at the University of Munich, the study will follow a prospective randomized design over three years, focusing on patients with urothelial carcinoma of the bladder. The primary endpoint is to assess the impact of physical activity on complications associated with the surgery.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients diagnosed with muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma of the bladder who are scheduled for radical cystectomy.
Not a fit: Patients who require walking aids, have depression, or suffer from significant cardiovascular, neuromuscular, or orthopedic disorders may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to improved recovery and reduced complications for bladder cancer patients undergoing surgery.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies on prehabilitation in cancer patients have shown improvements in strength and fitness, but results regarding complications and mortality have been mixed, making this approach both relevant and somewhat novel.
