What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess how starting hemodialysis treatment affects the emotional and cognitive functions of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It will also investigate changes in brain structure through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after treatment. The study will collect demographic and clinical data, including various health indicators and quality of life measures, to identify relevant clinical risk factors and potential therapeutic targets. Participants will include both new and long-term hemodialysis patients at Beijing Friendship Hospital.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older who are either new to hemodialysis or have been on hemodialysis for at least six months.

Not a fit: Patients with severe pre-existing central nervous system diseases or those unable to complete MRI examinations will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of emotional and cognitive challenges faced by kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies examining cognitive and emotional impacts of chronic illnesses, this specific focus on hemodialysis patients using MRI is relatively novel.
