What this trial studies
This study investigates how bariatric surgery affects cardiac function in patients with hypertension, using echocardiography to assess changes. It focuses on patients aged 18-70 with a BMI over 24 who have been treated for hypertension with multiple medications. The study aims to clarify the effects of different types of bariatric surgery, specifically laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, on heart structure and function. By understanding these effects, the research seeks to provide insights into the cardiovascular benefits of weight loss surgery.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18-70 with a BMI over 24 who have a history of hypertension and are undergoing bariatric surgery.
Not a fit: Patients with secondary hypertension unrelated to sleep apnea or those with recent cardiovascular events may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved cardiac health and management of hypertension in obese patients.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promising results regarding the cardiovascular benefits of bariatric surgery, but this specific investigation into cardiac function in hypertensive patients is less explored.
