Immune and breathing measurements in children with Down syndrome and pneumonia

Relationship Between Immune Profile and Respiratory Parameters in Down Syndrome Children With Acute Pneumonia: Pre-Intervention Analysis

Observational Badr University · NCT07366593

What this trial studies

This is a descriptive, cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 40 children with Down syndrome enrolled before an intervention. Investigators measured serum IgG, IgA, and IgM by nephelometry, total white blood cell count by automated analyzer, respiratory rate by manual count, and oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry. They used Pearson or Spearman correlation tests to examine relationships among immune markers, respiratory parameters, and age. The analysis aims to characterize associations at presentation rather than to test a treatment.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Children with Down syndrome who have acute bronchopneumonia, sufficient cognitive ability to cooperate with measurements, and no severe congenital heart defects or known primary immunodeficiencies.

Not a fit: Children with severe congenital heart defects, primary immunodeficiencies, or without acute pneumonia were excluded and are unlikely to benefit from the study's findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If findings show clear links between immune markers and respiratory status, clinicians might better identify children at higher risk of respiratory compromise and tailor monitoring.

How similar studies have performed: Prior work has documented immune abnormalities in people with Down syndrome, but direct correlations between serum immunoglobulins and respiratory measures during acute pneumonia are limited.
