Identifying pain sources in knee osteoarthritis patients awaiting surgery

Prediction Modelling of TKA Non-responders Using Clinical and Pain Sensitization Measures

University Health Network, Toronto · NCT06066684

What this trial studies

This observational pilot trial focuses on patients with knee osteoarthritis who are on the waitlist for total knee arthroplasty. The study aims to utilize pain diagnosis tools to identify underlying pain conditions, such as myofascial pain syndrome and central sensitization, that may contribute to persistent pain after surgery. By understanding these pain sources, orthopedic surgeons can better assess the risk of patients becoming non-responders to total knee arthroplasty. The trial is conducted at two locations in Ontario, Canada.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 or older who are on the waitlist for unilateral total knee arthroplasty due to knee osteoarthritis.

Not a fit: Patients undergoing revision or non-elective surgery, or those unable to provide informed consent, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved identification of patients at risk for ongoing pain after knee surgery, allowing for better preoperative planning and management.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of identifying pain sources in knee osteoarthritis patients is gaining attention, this specific observational study is novel and has not been extensively tested in prior research.
